Year In Review 2024: Preparation and Small Steps Towards Future Success
As 2024 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on a year filled with growth, change, and the courage to take steps toward building the life I’ve envisioned. This year was all about preparation and laying the foundation for my future. While the journey was not without its challenges, it was also rich with new experiences, lessons, and moments of pride.
One of the biggest milestones was stepping into the world of online business. At the beginning of the year, I participated in a free business masterclass series by Sigrun, which inspired me to join the SOMBA Kickstart program. This gave me the tools and confidence to create and host my first free online course, Cycle Syncing for Better Wellbeing. Though I was nervous and felt there was so much more I could learn, I took the leap and embraced the experience.
This year also marked the beginning of my internship as a fertility awareness educator, bringing me closer to my goal of becoming a certified Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner. Alongside these professional achievements, I made significant personal changes. I left a job that no longer served me, took time to explore my passions, and moved in with my boyfriend, deepening our relationship.
From hosting my first course to traveling with my boyfriend to Finland and Estonia, this year has been a mix of growth, exploration, and finding balance. While I faced moments of doubt and struggled with consistency in reaching my goals, I’ve learned that happiness and fulfilment come from aligning my life with my values and dreams.
2024 was the year of taking small but meaningful steps toward a brighter future, and I can’t wait to see what 2025 will bring.

My topics and highlights in 2024
First steps towards my own business
As the year changed to 2024 I was taking 12 days of masterclasses, a free online business masterclass series by Sigrun. I had been dreaming of my own business for a while and I had many ideas to start with: astrology, translating, fertility awareness... I started my second year of studying at the Justisse College International to become Fertility Awareness Educator and Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner, and I was getting closer to starting my internship. For the internship I would need 10 clients to teach the Justisse Method to. I knew I was going to need some business skills that I did not have from before. Yeah maybe I should have gone to business school instead of studying Environmental and Marine Biology in the University... Luckily nowadays there are online courses that can teach you skills even if you don't have formal education on the matter. So I signed up for Sigrun's program SOMBA Kickstart at the last minute. I was unsure of my decision as I knew it would entail teaching a free online course, and techically I could not teach the Justisse method yet before I was officially in my intership. So I decided I could teach something related, and hope that at the end of the free course I could get enough clients for my internship. It was a big step for me to offer my first online course, Cycle Syncing for Better Wellbeing. I know I could have done it even better if I had more time and confidence on myself, but better done than perfect.

Smelling like a deep fryer
I was still working at a gas station pizzeria in a small village in Iceland. It was a job that I found through Nordjobb, a platform where Nordic young people from 18 to 30 year olds can find a job in another Nordic country. It was a decent job, I got pretty good salary when I worked a lot, I got to know many local people, learned some basic Icelandic (talking about food, lottery etc.), and talked with tourists that took a bit longer route than the main road around Iceland. On many occasions, I however considered leaving the job. I asked for some less work so that I would have more time to study and starting my business. I still continued working rather a lot, not leaving me much time to advance my goals.
Moving with my boyfriend
This was the first full year with my Icelandic boyfriend as we started dating the previous November. We used to be neighbours, him living upstairs with his roommate and me living downstairs with my roommate. His roommate must have gotten sick of me hanging out upstairs so much that he ended up getting a new roommate. My boyfriend ended up moving back to his parents house, and I ended up moving together with him after a while. I was mostly sad to leave the beautiful view of the sea and the mountains, and have that view replaced by a fish meal factory. Regardless of the lesser views, it has been good to live here. I have gotten to know his family, and we still have some of our own space downstairs of the house. Also this arrangement is temporary and we'll see when something else comes up.

Travel to Finland and Estonia
This was the first time we got to travel together with my boyfriend. We drove all the way across Iceland to the Keflavik international airport and took a flight to Helsinki. We took the ferry over to Tallinn and spend a few days enjoying the medieval festival of the old town Tallinn that takes place every July. We also explored more modern parts of Tallinn and stayed at a container hotel in a trendy area called Telliskivi. There was also an unauthorized exchibition of Banksy witch was interesting to see. When we got back to Helsinki from Tallinn, we spend a day exploring the sea fortress Suomenlinna (Sveaborg), and then headed to Tampere where my parents live. We spend some time at their place and also at their cottage and explores around the city and nearby. We went all the way to Ähtäri Zoo, where we could see the pandas before they were sent back to China a few month later. We also went to Turku where my sister lives and where I used to study at the Åbo Akademi University. We met some of my friends and rode around the city with bikes. There was also an interesting event The Tall Ships Races, where ships all around the world come to the river Aura. We stepped onboard a ship from Ecuador which was quite impressive. We ended the trip by going to Helsinki to explore a bit more and for Flogging Molly concert. Throughout the trip we went swimming to lakes and sea as often as we could, because unlike in Iceland, the waters are actually warm (if we don't count the hot baths). We flew back to Iceland and spend a night and day in Akureyri visiting the forest baths. Before heading back home to Vopnafjörđur, we visited beautiful waterfall Gođafoss (God Falls).

Chasing some meaning and leaving my job
I faced some difficulties during the year. I struggled allocating enough time to my goals, refining my offer and attracting clients. I was not very consistently marketing myself. However I took small steps along the way. I did some posts and short videos on social media, started an email newsletter, created my website and started a blog. That is something, even if not super consistent.
I have the feeling I develop IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) or something similar every time I'm not happy with my life. This happened for the first time during the lockdown in 2020, when I was stuck at home and I should have been writing my masters thesis. Now, I've felt stuck in my life and I wasn't complete sure what was to blame for it. I knew that I really wanted to quit my job. I was also growing tired of the small village I was living in. I think on some ways I was loosing myself. I had not been taking my long and sometimes sweaty walks, or you could call them hikes. I was not doing yoga consistently either.
When I look back to the times in my life when I have been the happiest, one time I always remember was when I was doing my internship at a biological station in the Åland Islands. That was my dream life: Living in a beautiful house in the middle of the nature, doing lot's of yoga (also outdoors), taking bike trips and runs to observatory towers in the woods, skinny dipping at midnight after a run, going to a sauna that heats up with a wood stove. Another time I was happy although a bit broken after a breakup, was when I first moved to Iceland in late 2022. I was taking more or less daily walks or hikes, I was driving alone for the first time, I was truly enjoying the nature and community although I didn't know many people yet. I had also finally started studying what I was I truly passionate about: Fertility Awarenes and Holistic Reproductive Health. The times I've been the happiest, I have been connected to my purpose and close to nature. I have been independent and truly living for myself.
This year I knew the gas station I worked at was going to change the people who keep it, or owners you could call them. I got a resignation letter late October, so I had two month notice before my job would end. I was terrified to leave the job earlier because I received a salary every month. The money was very welcome as I need to pay for my studies. I knew I wanted to start my own business, and that's what I told people who asked what I was going to do after the gas station. At some point I got terrified of the idea of not getting a consistent salary every month, as I didn't know how long it would take before I would start earning with my business. So this fear lead me to start looking for the next job. I even applied for one job, I thought I should get some use for my master's degree in biology and get out of this small village.
Now at the end of the year I've been following along with 12 days of masterclasses like I did a year ago. This year I was fast to sign up for SOMBA Kickstart again. I can't wait to take another start with my online business journey and create yet another even better course. As the year ends with a new moon in Capricorn it is the perfect time to take our goals seriously and start anew. I returned my key to work and picked up my charger I had left at work. Now I'm free to fully follow my dreams and goals. I want to start another year from a fresh "clean table" as we say in Finnish.
